About Dubai
Why Dubai Goes Crazy Hard
Dubai has transformed from a quiet fishing village and pearl diving centre into one of the world's most visited cities in just five decades. The Burj Khalifa, standing at 828 metres, is the tallest structure ever built, and from its observation deck on the 148th floor the city below reveals a geometry of ambition that extends from the man made Palm Jumeirah into the Arabian Gulf.
But Dubai's character runs deeper than its glass and steel. The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood preserves wind tower houses from the 1890s, while the Gold Souk in Deira remains one of the largest gold markets in the world, where traditional haggling is still the way business is done. The Dubai Creek, the saltwater inlet that originally divided the city, is still crossed by wooden abra boats for just one dirham.
Beyond the city, the Arabian Desert offers experiences that range from luxury glamping under Bedouin style tents to dawn hot air balloon flights over the dunes. Abu Dhabi, just 90 minutes away, houses the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the forthcoming Guggenheim, making it an essential addition to any Dubai itinerary.
