About Thailand

Why Thailand Is That Girl

Thailand sits at the heart of Southeast Asia, a country of 513,120 square kilometres that moves seamlessly between ancient Buddhist kingdoms and a thoroughly modern tourism infrastructure. Bangkok alone holds over 400 functioning Buddhist temples, the most famous being Wat Phra Kaew within the Grand Palace complex, home to the Emerald Buddha carved from a single block of jade.

The southern coastline splits into two distinct personalities. The Andaman Sea coast, home to Phuket, Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands, offers dramatic limestone karsts rising vertically from emerald water, while the Gulf of Thailand shelters the calmer, coconut palm fringed islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The northern city of Chiang Mai, once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, sits in a mountain valley surrounded by over 300 temples and is the gateway to hill tribe villages, elephant sanctuaries and some of the finest cooking schools in the country.

Thai cuisine, recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, is as varied as the landscape. From Michelin starred restaurants in Bangkok to a 40 baht pad thai from a street cart in Chiang Mai's Sunday Walking Street, the flavour profile of sweet, sour, salty and spicy is woven into every meal.
